Education program

Vocational English as a Second Language Basic Carpentry (VESL)

Community needs brought a Latino Outreach Coordinator to our team in 2016, with a small amount of funding and community partner support to provide English Language Learners wanting to learn a trade no-cost English as a Second Language Classes (ESL) classes paired with additional opportunities to obtain industry recognized credentials including OSHA 10 Certification and Lead Safe Renovate and Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) Certification.  Students were also given additional resources and guidance to navigate opportunities to further their professional development and become entrepreneurs.  

With additional funding from Real Jobs RI in 2018 the Vocational English as a Second Language program (VESL) replaced the ESL programs and currently offers three (3) programs per academic year.  The VESL program is a no-cost 15-week training program which includes English Language Learning provided through our partnership with Dorcas International Institute combined with trade training provided by RCWP which includes construction terminology and construction math paired with hands-on training in a real work environment atmosphere at our fully equipped training facility located in Central Falls.  Students design and construct small projects preparing them for entry level carpentry jobs in residential construction.  Students also receive resume writing, job search assistance, and guidance to navigate opportunities to further their professional development and become entrepreneurs.

RCWPRI Training Program

Pre-Apprentice Training Programs for Carpentry, Electrical, and Plumbing/HVAC

Expanding our no-cost 26-Week Pre-Apprentice Carpentry Programs from two (2) carpentry programs in 2018 to five (5) in 2019 and adding one (2) Electrical and one (1) Plumbing/HVACR to our offerings we are now running seven (7) pre-apprentice programs per academic year.  Pre-Apprentice students receive industry recognized credentials including OSHA 10 Construction, Lead Safe Renovate Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) Certification, First Aid, AED and CPR Certification, Financial Empowerment, and the HBI PACT Certificate related to their career path.

2021 brings continued growth expanding customizable pre-apprentice training programs to specialized sectors in residential construction. 

Pre-Apprentice Energy Weatherization Auditor, Installer & Performance Evaluator

Expanding our Pre-Apprentice Carpentry Program in Collaboration with CLEAResult and Community Action Programs statewide we now offer a customized pre-apprentice training program for energy and weatherization auditors, installers, and evaluators. 

This specialized program incorporates basic construction knowledge paired with building science to demonstrate how various components of a home interact to affect the overall performance.  

Key skills for the energy and weatherization auditor are delivered to understand the relationship between the building envelope, heating, A/C, insulation, mechanical, ventilation, lighting, appliances, and other systems of the home.

Students receive industry recognized credentials including, OSHA 10 Construction, Lead Safe Renovate Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) Certification, First Aid, AED and CPR Certification, Financial Empowerment, the HBI PACT Carpentry, and Weatherization Certificates.

Many specialized fields in residential construction require core competencies, one being basic construction knowledge, for example the collaboration with CLEAResult to develop a training program that provides skills and industry credentials to entry level candidates training to preform energy audits for Community Action Agencies that offer Weatherization Assistance Programs.
